Transport Hub & Public Realm Works.
The first phase of works to improve access at the Transport Hub in Chalmers St has been completed on time and within budget. Clydebank re-built secured funding through the Council from SPT to upgrade the busbays at Chalmers St with the revamped concrete bays and the introduction of granite kerbs extending the busbays to allow improved access for buses and dropping off for taxis.
The installation of Kassel herbs at the bus shelters has helped improve access for the disabled and prams. An additional 3 bay bus shelter has been installed equipped with CCTV and real time bus information capacity.
With these works complete work has commenced on the new access and public realm improvements for Alexander St & Hume St. A new junction will created from Hume St onto Glasgow Rd allowing access for residents and the Co-op Funeral Care directly to the A814.
This will enable Hume St to be closed off at the Chalmers St end and Alexander St will become a two-way street with turning area allowing the creation of a new public space onto Glasgow Rd acting as a focal point for the community.
The public space will include seating and other street furniture, trees and high quality granite paving to provide an attractive amenity space as well as a key pedestrian area for crossing the A814 to link with future riverside development.
The taxi rank will retain and enhance its position at the top of Alexander St on both sides of the street addressing the long term issue of access for disabled users. A feeder rank will be located at the top of the closed off Hume St linked to Alexander St with a camera/monitor facility.
Clydebank re-built is working closely with WDC to deliver these improvements with its appointed contractor Land Engineering. Regular updates will be provided in consultation with stakeholders throughout the project.
Works commenced in October this year with the installation of the infrastructure for the new junction and the pavement and parking bay upgrading in Alexander St.
Works will take a further 6 months to complete at a cost of just under £1 million.
