Clydebank re-built and West Dunbartonshire Council are working in partnership to improve the functioning of the town centre and to complement development activity on the riverside. Several early action projects have already been completed, including the upgrade of the north canal bank between Argyll Road and Kilbowie Road as well as the replacement of the canopy over the main canal pedestrian bridge at the Clyde Shopping Centre.
Other projects are also being advanced in partnership with the
Council.
The Council-owned Playdrome leisure centre site has been marketed
for a food superstore. Bids are being assessed and further news is
expected in Autumn 2009.
Detailed proposals are also being developed to upgrade transport
facilities focussed on Chalmers Street. Strathclyde Partnership for
Transport envisages constructing a new bus station, starting in
2010, and there a plans to improve other facilities in the
vicinity.
Clydebank re-built is committed to upgrading Hume Street and
Alexander Street as strategic links to Queens Quays and the Civic
Heart, with a programme of environmental and streetscape works also
expected to begin in 2010.
In addition, West Dunbartonshire Council has made a bid to the Scottish Government for Town Centre Regeneration Fund monies. If successful, it is intended that environmental improvements will be undertaken to the south canal bank of the canal in the town centre, complementing improvements on the north bank. A decision of this funding is expected in October / November 2009 although design works are already underway.
