Public Space

To herald the wider regeneration of Clydebank, Clydebank re-built at the start developed a programme of public realm works to upgrade the entry points and main approach roads into Clydebank and its riverside development areas.

The aim of the programme was to highlight that the regeneration process had begun and to signal a new, confident Clydebank, through the creation of a series of new gateways to the town, the strategic placement of artworks and architectural lighting, and by establishing a family of attractive new signage.

Phases 1-5 of the public realm programmed works are now complete.

Phases 1 & 2 of the Advanced Works Projects saw the upgrade of the central reservation along the Glasgow Road/Dumbarton Road corridor, from its junction with Mill Road, in the East to Beardmore Street junction, in the west and the transformation of Solidarity Plaza, the public space opposite Clydebank Town Hall.

These works were funded by West Dunbartonshire Council, Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire and the European Regional Development Fund.Central Reservation Works included soft landscaping, architectural feature lighting, signage and new street lighting columns.

Trees have been planted to create an avenue effect, groups of light sticks have been erected to continue the avenue effect in a visually structured way.The works at Solidarity Plaza, the public space opposite Clydebank Town Hall, were aimed at creating a flexible civic space, built with high quality granite and introducing intensive areas of structured landscaping. The planting of mature trees along the frontage of the space gives users a sense of seclusion from the busy Dumbarton Road in front of it yet it still allows views of the Category B Listed Town Hall across the road. The space incorporates a 10 meter granite monolith which reflects the Towns shipbuilding heritage in the red LED prow markings along its front and side edges.

Phase 3 saw the upgrade of Agamemnon Street and its junction with Dumbarton Road to open up access to key riverside sites and to the Golden Jubilee Hospital easing congestion on Beardmore Street and improving safety and security for the residents and pedestrians using Agamemnon Street. The latter stages of these works saw the removal of the disused railway bridge and upgrade the carriageway beneath it as part of this project.

Phase 4 of the public realm works saw the uplighting of six railway bridge underpasses in Central Clydebank in June 2006. LED uplighters were installed to colour wash the walls under the bridges in red and green alternatively. This phase also saw the installation of a changing image projected onto the southern elevation of Newshot court Tower Block at Clydebank East High Flats.

Phase 5 of the Public Realm Works was completed in July 2007 and saw the upgrade of the final section of central reservation along Glasgow Road between Argyll Road and Kilbowie Road.
These works included the installation of a new pedestrian crossing from Alexander Street/Hume Street across to Wallace Street
